What are amino acids and why does your body need them?

Amino acids are organic compounds that make up proteins and are vital for many critical processes in your body, including muscle building, the synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters.

Your body needs 20 different amino acids to grow and function properly. Nine of these are classified as essential because your body cannot produce them. 

Essential amino acids that must be obtained through diet
  1. Histidine: used to produce histamine, a neurotransmitter that is vital to immune response, digestion, sexual function and sleep-wake cycles. It’s also  critical for maintaining the myelin sheath, a protective barrier that surrounds your nerve cells
  2. Isoleucine: involved in muscle metabolism and important for immune function, haemoglobin production and energy regulation
  3. Leucine: critical for protein synthesis and muscle repair. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, stimulates wound healing and produces growth hormones
  4. Lysine: plays major roles in protein synthesis, hormone and enzyme production and the absorption of calcium. It’s also important for energy production, immune function and the production of collagen and elastin
  5. Methionine: plays an important role in metabolism and detoxification. It’s also necessary for tissue growth and the absorption of vital minerals, zinc and selenium
  6. Phenylalanine: plays a role in the structure and function of proteins and enzymes, as well as the production of other amino acids
  7. Threonine: a principal component of proteins such as collagen and elastin, which are important components of the skin and connective tissue. It also plays a role in fat metabolism and immune function
  8. Tryptophan: a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates your appetite, sleep and mood. Also needed to maintain proper nitrogen balance
  9. Valine: helps stimulate muscle growth and regeneration and is involved in energy production

Vegan Protein

Complete protein sources provide the nine amino acids, however many plant proteins, including pea and rice, only provide a few of these. Fortunately, combining them provides an optimal amino acid profile. Pea protein is low in the amino acids cysteine and methionine, but rich in lysine, whereas rice protein is low in lysine, but super-high in cysteine and methionine.
