This week we sat down with Gutrition's founder Claire and discussed all things IBS and FODMAPs. Here's what she had to say!


We’d love to hear a little bit about your IBS journey. Would you mind sharing with us?

It’s hard to pinpoint when my journey all began, but I was officially diagnosed with IBS in 2017. Like many other IBS warriors, this diagnosis came after countless medical appointments, tests, and repeated conversations about my gut history. I was at a point where I felt like my gut reacted to everything I ate and I’d learned to live with daily digestive struggles and discomfort.

I was introduced to the low FODMAP diet soon after that and it took me a bit of trial and error to find the right support in implementing the diet and starting the (nerve-wracking!) re-introduction process. I love to cook and eat out, and I found the diet to be incredibly depressing, confusing, and restrictive in the beginning. It really zapped my love of food. But the inner foodie in me embraced the challenge of modifying my favorite meals to be FODMAP friendly and learning how to eat around my food intolerances.

Tell us about Gutrition. What is it? Who is it for? How did it come about?

Gutrition is all about simplifying the road to freedom from digestive issues. We know that the low FODMAP diet can be confusing, time-consuming and overwhelming to follow, particularly in the beginning. So, we aim to take the fuss out of low FODMAP cooking. What advice would you have for someone who’s starting out on the low FODMAP diet?

The biggest piece of advice I would have is to not try and follow the diet on your own. If you haven’t already, I would recommend reaching out to a dietitian who specialises in IBS and the low FODMAP diet. We know that those who follow the low FODMAP diet with the support of a dietitian get better results, faster, and their support is invaluable. I’d also recommend downloading the Monash Low FODMAP app - this will be a go-to resource in your FODMAP journey.

Finally, I’d recommend drawing upon the many great low FODMAP products and services that now exist to help make the transition that little bit easier.
